2011 Fulbright S&T Fellow

Alexandru Nechifor is a Ph.D. candidate at the Georgia Institute of Technology. His research proposal is related to the field of Wide Area Monitoring Systems (WAMS), which through the use of synchronized measurements, can automate the process of network state estimation and increase the awareness of the power grid operator, helping to predict and prevent the occurrence of system blackouts.

Alexandru received his M.Sc. in Electrical Power Systems Engineering at University of Manchester, where as part of his thesis project, he performed research on the development of a testing platform for the assessment of Wide Area Monitoring Systems. During his M.Sc. study, he volunteered as a student representative and worked closely with faculty and students to improve their study experience at University of Manchester.

He received his Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering from “Politehnica” University of Bucharest, in his native Romania. During his undergraduate studies he completed intensive research in the field of automated measurement systems. He has published and presented his results from this research in IEEE Journal and received the Best Undergraduate Student Paper Award at the IEEE I2MTC 2009 conference for his paper: “Online measurements and control of a laboratory scale dc grid.” Eager to offer his time, energy and expertise to help other students, Alexandru volunteered as a Student Representative for the IIEE I&M Society’s Administrative Committee (AdCom) for three years. He recently co-chaired an event for graduate students at the IEEE I2MTC 2011 conference and he is presently developing an educational piece of software meant to automate the process of taking measured data online.
