Electrical Engineering
2011 Fulbright S& T Fellow

Fariah Mahzabeen is a Ph.D. candidate in the department of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. She is focusing her research on Communication Systems.

Among the diverse aspects of Communication Systems, Fariah is most intrigued by Optical Communication. In her research she will attempt to integrate Photonics with Telecommunication by exploring different novel optical technologies like Photonic Band Gap Fibers, Plasmonics and Silicon Photonics. Her research will focus on implementing these technologies in real life communication networks such that ever increasing bandwidth demands can be met with low energy consumption and high reliability. Her ultimate goal is to help build a next generation ubiquitous, ultra fast, and energy efficient optical network.

Fariah comes from Bangladesh, a country of great natural beauties and warm people. Prior to her selection as a 2011 International Fulbright Science & Technology Fellow, she completed her Bachelor’s in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering from North South University, Bangladesh. At her undergraduate institution, she served as a teaching assistant. At the same time, Fariah completed a three month long internship at GrameenPhone, a business concern of Telenor, in Bangladesh. She then joined Brac University, Bangladesh where she worked as a lecturer at the department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

Fariah takes great interest in photography and painting. She is an enthusiastic traveler as well and loves knowing about different people and cultures. She feels strongly optimistic that she would eventually apply her knowledge to enhance communication facilities not only in her country but also globally so that everyone around the globe remains connected.
