Zihan Hans Liu is pursuing doctoral studies in Mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research interests are in the areas of geometry and geometric analysis, the study of curved spaces, using methods from analysis and differential equations.

Prior to receiving the 2011 International Fulbright Science & Technology Award, Hans grew up in Sweden, where he has won top awards from national mathematics and science contests. He has also represented Sweden twice in the International Mathematical Olympiad. For his university studies, he moved to the United Kingdom, where he has received a Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Mathematics from the University of Cambridge. While carrying out his studies at Cambridge, Hans simultaneously worked with image analysis as a research assistant at the Department of Human Geography at Stockholm University developing algorithms for automatic classification of satellite images. He has also worked with biomedical imaging at the Broad Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He has also spent time volunteering as an elementary school teacher in Cambridge, UK.
