2011 Fulbright S&T Fellow

With the support of the 2011 Fulbright Science & Technology Award, Mislav Balokovic is pursuing doctorate studies at the California Institute of Technology. His field of interest is observational cosmology, with particular emphasis on the evolution of galaxies and active galactic nuclei from the early Universe to its current state. He intends to use observations from various portions of the electromagnetic spectrum to unravel the details of the interplay between early starformation, the enrichment of interstellar medium and the growth of supermassive black holes. Better understanding of galaxies is one of the key components in understanding the Universe and its evolution.

Mislav is a native of Croatia, where he obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Physics from the University of Zagreb and a Master's Degree in Physics/Astrophysics from the University of Split. While studying for his degrees, he explored various topics in astrophysics, ranging from detection of extrasolar planets to modelling faraway quasars. He is actively involved in amateur astronomy outreach projects through which he hopes to show to the general public that science, and astronomy in particular, can be inspiring both as a hobby and as a profession. His other interests include philosophy, cooking, gardening and traveling.
